DESCRIPTION: Enhances or resists ankle motion while allowing some motion and/or energy storage. It is used when ankle movement is permitted but movement restrictions to a certain extent is required.
This AFO contains mechanical joints comprised of springs to resist or assist ankle movement. This ensures the toe will not drag while walking.

Dynamic AFO can be a plastic, metal or carbon fibre design.
This jointed AFO is made with a moving part, or joint, which hinges at the ankle joint. It is designed to allow motion at the ankle joint, but still offers the correction that the Three-Point Pressure System offers. The jointed AFO is a good tool to try to optimize a gait pattern.
Hinged AFO are braces that are used to control plantar and/or dorsi flexion (up or down movements of the foot) and inversion/eversion (side to side) movements.
This type of AFO is used to facilitate body motion to allow optimal function. A dynamic AFO provides subtalar stabilization while allowing free ankle dorsiflexion and free or restricted plantar flexion. This can also be used to treat adult acquired flat foot. Depending upon the type of hinge used the dynamic AFO may provide dorsiflexion assistance to correct foot drop.
